The piece
Shakudō tsuba with fine nanako and two Chinese sages in takabori and iroe before a bamboo grove, signed 百壽軒芳信 (Hyakujuken Yoshinobu) with kaō.
Oval tsuba (70.2 × 65.3 mm according to the original seller) signed on the reverse 百壽軒芳信 (Hyakujuken Yoshinobu) followed by his kaō, a signature the photographs show clearly on both sides of the central opening. Yoshinobu, of Satsuma origin according to the original seller, is known for compositions on classical Chinese themes in polychrome high relief. The subject is the sages of the bamboo grove (chikurin no kenjin): on the obverse, two smiling scholars in takabori, with black robes scattered with gold clouds, faces in silvery metal and a small reddish copper object in hand, stand on a polished mound with kebori grasses and gold dots; bamboo leaves in gold and silver appear above. The reverse continues with bamboo stems and leaves. The plate is shakudō with very fine, even nanako, contrasting with the polished areas. The photographs show a dark, even patina, intact gilding and no cracks or rust; there is a small copper sekigane in the central opening. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a paulownia box, neither of which appears in the photographs.
