The piece

A kozuka and kōgai set in shakudō nanako with flowering peony branches in takabori with gold and copper iroe, signed Seiyōken Masatoshi.

A futatokoro (matching kozuka and kōgai) made in the same workshop on a single theme: a flowering peony branch. On a shakudō ground with fine, even nanako, the branches are applied in high relief (takabori) as suemon: the large bloom in a reddish copper metal, the leaves in shakudō, and the young leaves and a smaller flower in gold (iroe). The top of the kōgai is chiselled with scrolls. The backs are polished shakudō (migaki), each with a diagonal gold panel. The photographs show the engraved signature 青陽軒正寿 (Seiyōken Masatoshi) on the back of the kōgai; the original seller states that it comes with a kaō. Judging from the photographs, the condition is good: crisp nanako, gold and colours intact, and an even patina with a few light surface marks. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper attributing the set to Seiyōken Masatoshi; the certificate is not shown in the photographs. The set comes in a fabric-lined wooden box.

Strong points

  • Complete kozuka and kōgai set on the same peony theme
  • Shakudō ground with fine, even nanako
  • Takabori with well-preserved gold and copper iroe
  • Polished shakudō backs with gold panels
  • Signed; the original seller declares a Tokubetsu Hozon paper

Points to bear in mind

  • The paper is not shown in the photographs; the level is the one declared by the original seller
  • The signature can only be read on the kōgai, and not in full at this resolution
  • The period is inferred from the style, as the set is not dated
