The piece
A kozuka and kōgai set in shakudō nanako with millet ears in gold and colours, signed 一斎東明 (Issai Tōmei) with kaō, with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.
A futatokoro, a matched kozuka and kōgai, decorated with ears of millet (awaho-zu), the subject for which Araki Tōmei, who signed as Issai Tōmei, is best known. According to the original seller, he was born in Kyoto in 1817, trained first under Gotō Tōjō and later under Gotō Ichijō, who granted him the name Issai. Both pieces are of shakudō with a very even nanako ground; the millet ears, in takabori and suemon zōgan, alternate between gold and a reddish-brown tone among black shakudō leaves tipped in gold, each grain chiselled individually. The lower half of the kōgai is gilt with a striated finish, and both pieces have gilt end caps. The polished shakudō backs carry the engraved signature 一斎東明 (Issai Tōmei) followed by the kaō, identical on both pieces. The photographs show good condition: crisp nanako, unworn relief, a slight mottling of the patina on the backs and small marks on the gilt ends. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper no. 2002100, dated 16 January 2015, describes the set as 粟穂図二所 (awaho-zu futatokoro) in shakudō nanako with takabori, suemon zōgan and iroe, and accepts the signature on both pieces.
