The piece

Shakudō kōgai with a nanako ground and a small sailing boat on the waves in takabori with gold and silver iroe, attributed by the Gotō house itself to its 9th master, Teijō.

Kōgai of the Gotō main line which, according to the original seller, bears an attribution inscription (kiwame-mei) cut by the 13th master of the family, with his kaō, assigning it to the 9th master, Teijō (程乗, Teijō). The original seller notes that Teijō served the Maeda house of Kaga and laid the foundations for the flourishing of that province's metalworkers. The subject is a small sailing boat moving across gentle waves beneath a wide sky. The photographs show a shakudō ground of very fine, even nanako, the waves in silver-toned takabori and the wind-filled sail in gold; the frame and body are gold-toned, and the original seller states that the back plate is gold-clad. It measures 212 mm in length and 12.8 mm in width. In the photographs the condition is good: crisp relief, intact nanako and only light handling scratches on the frame. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a custom-made paulownia box; neither the paper nor the inscription on the back appears in the photographs.
