The piece

Unsigned round tsuba of the Hirata school, with a quiver (ebira) in inlaid shippō enamel on an ishime-textured copper ground; the original seller places it in the early Edo period.

A round, slightly upright tsuba, unsigned (mumei), attributed to the Hirata school, the line of enamellers in shogunal service who made shippō famous on sword fittings. The original seller describes it as yamagane with an ishime finish, although the seller's commentary speaks of a shakudō ground; the photographs show a dark, brownish copper alloy with a fine granular texture. The motif is a quiver (ebira) with its arrows and a branch, in inlaid enamel of turquoise, yellow, white, orange and greyish green, which passes through the plate and is visible on both faces. According to the original seller, the cloudy, restrained colours and the pores and bubbles in the polished enamel point to an archaic style of shippō, typical of the earliest generations of the school. In the photographs the enamel is complete; the field shows fine scratches and a few light marks, more visible on the reverse, and the central opening carries sekigane. Dimensions according to the original seller: 73 × 71 mm, 3.2 mm thick at the seppa-dai. It comes in a fitted paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper attributing it to Hirata, which does not appear in the photographs.
