The piece

Iron tsuba depicting a Buddhist rosary (juzu), carved and pierced in nikubori ji-sukashi, signed by Akasaka Tadatoshi, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

Free-form iron tsuba with a rounded rim, maru-mimi (丸耳), depicting a Buddhist rosary, juzu (数珠), carved in the round and pierced. A large ring of flattened beads, broken by two larger opposing beads, encloses a second rosary of small beads that holds the seppa-dai, flanked by four tassels engraved with fine lines. The signature, 武州住赤坂 忠時作 (Bushū-jū Akasaka Tadatoshi saku), is cut on both sides of the central opening. Tadatoshi worked in the Akasaka school of Musashi province, known for pierced iron. The original seller attributes the piece to the fifth generation, known for works dated in the Bunka era (1804–1818), on the basis of the signature style and the hakogaki by Satō Kanzan, and links the motif to the tradition of the Haguro yamabushi. The photographs show iron of an even dark brown colour, without red rust or knocks, with the texture of the metal visible on the larger beads and on the seppa-dai. The NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (tokubetsu hozon tōsōgu) paper, dated 26 June 2026, describes it as a 数珠透鐔 (juzu sukashi tsuba) in iron worked in nikubori ji-sukashi and records the signature. According to the seller it measures 7.7 × 7.3 cm, 0.5 cm thick at the seppa-dai. It is kept in an inscribed paulownia box.
