A family of Miike smiths

According to the history his family tells, the Komiya house of Ōmuta was founded as a sword forge in 1786; its smiths worked for the Yanagawa clan, gave up swords when carrying them was banned and went back to forging them in 1935. Their model is Miike Tenta Mitsuyo (三池典太光世).

Several Komiya forge in the house today: his grandfather Kuniharu (國治, 1929–2020), his father Yasukimitsu (安氣光, born in 1956) and his uncle Sōyōmitsu (早陽光, born in 1959), who signs 四郎國光 (Shirō Kunimitsu). His brother Komiya Mitsutoshi (小宮光敏) is a polisher. Komiya Sōyōmitsu, Komiya Yasukimitsu and Komiya Mitsutoshi, all from Fukuoka, also appear in the NBTHK lists.

Today

He says himself that in Miike he forges blades for looking at and also for iaidō and tameshigiri. In April 2026, on receiving the Yūshūshō niseki, he wrote that he had been aiming for a special prize right after the 2025 one and that he would try again the following year.
