The howitzer katana
Sesko published two katana by the second Motohira with the same inscription: 征清之役明治廿八年一月於威海衛鹿角嘴堡塁以所獲之廿四珊礮片鍛此刀焉 (Seishin no yaku Meiji nijūhachinen ichigatsu Ikaiei ni oite Kakakushi hōrui ni eta nijūyon-senchi tsutsu no hen o motte kono katana o kitau, from Sesko’s transcription), “this katana was forged from a fragment of the 24 cm howitzer taken at the Lujiaozui battery, in Weihaiwei, in January 1895, in the war against the Qing”. The second adds 明治卅年五月於磯集成所 (Meiji sanjūnen gogatsu Iso Shūseijo ni oite), “in the fifth month of 1897, at the Shūsei of Iso”: the Shūseikan, the industrial complex that Shimazu Nariakira founded in Iso, on the outskirts of Kagoshima. Sesko later received the oshigata of a third.
