The piece
Wari-kōgai in polished red copper showing a hare gazing at the crescent moon among autumn grasses, in katakiri-bori and kebori, signed Kikuchi Tsunekatsu with kaō, with Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu papers.
A wari-kōgai, that is, a kōgai split lengthwise into two interlocking halves, by Kikuchi Tsunekatsu, founder of the Kikuchi school in Edo. According to the original seller, he was trained in the chiselling tradition of the Yokoya and Yanagawa lines and was active around the mid-18th century. The front shows a crouching hare raising its head towards a thin crescent moon, among long susuki leaves bent by the wind; the scene crosses the central joint and reads as a whole when the two halves are joined. The metal is polished red copper, hiirodō migaki-ji (緋色銅磨地), and the design is rendered in line alone, in katakiri kebori (片切毛彫): the bevelled cut gives strength to the crescent and the animal's outline, while the fine line describes fur and leaves. On the reverse, the signature 菊池序克 (Kikuchi Tsunekatsu) with kaō. The photographs show crisp lines and a surface with fine handling scratches and a few light spots near the head, with no visible dents or cracks. It measures 21.24 cm long and 12.1 mm wide and weighs 35.9 g, according to the original seller. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper no. 2011558, dated 19 June 2025, records it as signed by the maker. It comes with a paulownia box; the listing does not mention a hakogaki.
