The piece
Shakudō kozuka with a drum and its two heads in coloured shippō enamel within gold cloisons, and cords of inlaid twisted gold wire; Hirata school, late Edo period.
Unsigned (mumei) kozuka attributed by the original seller to the Hirata school, the line of enamellers founded by Hirata Dōnin in the early Edo period and specialised in shippō (七宝), vitreous enamel on metal. On a polished black shakudō ground lie the hourglass-shaped body of a drum, decorated with flowers in green, red, white, yellow and purple enamel, and its two round drumheads in white enamel with small blossoms, all enclosed by fine gold cloisons. The drum's cords unwind along the piece in inlaid twisted gold wire (zōgan). The original seller titles the work 鞨鼓図 (kakko-zu, "kakko drum") and gives dimensions of 97 × 14.2 mm. The reverse, shown in the photographs, is of a grey metal with a finish of fine diagonal lines. As for condition, the shakudō keeps an even dark patina with fine handling scratches; the white enamel of the drumheads shows cracks and a loss at the upper edge of the left drumhead. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper attributing the piece to Hirata shippō; the paper does not appear in the photographs. It comes in an uninscribed paulownia box.
