The piece
Round iron tsuba with a gunbai (war fan) outlined in gold nunome-zōgan and pierced in ito-sukashi, signed by Shigeyoshi of the Umetada school of Nishijin.
Marugata iron tsuba signed 城州西陣住埋忠橘重義 (Jōshū Nishijin-jū Umetada Tachibana Shigeyoshi), the work of Shigeyoshi, an artist of the Umetada school based in the Nishijin district of Kyoto. The motif is a gunbai, the general's command fan, filling the whole plate: its outline is drawn with a fine gold line in nunome-zōgan and, just inside it, an extremely fine ito-sukashi piercing separates the form from the ground. The iron has an ishime (granular) surface of dark brown with reddish tones. The photographs show the signature incised in two columns on either side of the central ana, the gold line complete on both faces and the piercings intact; scattered pale spots are visible on the surface, with no visible active rust, and remains of copper sekigane in the central opening. According to the original seller it measures 80 × 78.7 mm, with a thickness of 4.2 mm at the seppa-dai. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. The piece is kept in a paulownia box with a hakogaki by Dr Satō Kanzan, visible in the photographs, which titles it 埋忠重義軍扇文鐔 (Umetada Shigeyoshi gunsen-mon tsuba) and transcribes the signature.
