The piece

Iron tsuba signed by Hirata Harutoshi, with insects and a lizard in gold-outlined shippō enamel; Tokubetsu Hozon paper declared by the original seller.

Iron tsuba signed 平田春寿 (Hirata Harutoshi) on the front, beside the central opening. According to the original seller, Harutoshi was a pupil of Harunari, eighth master of the main Hirata line, the school specialising in cloisonné enamel, or shippō. On an iron plate with an ishime surface, in tate-marugata shape (upright oval) with a dote-mimi rim, a theme of insects (mushi-zukushi) is laid out: on the front a wasp, two small winged insects and a lizard; on the back a butterfly, another insect and a caterpillar. The figures are worked in green, blue, yellow, red and brown enamels outlined with very fine gold wire, and the lizard shows a gradation of greens and blues that evokes the sheen of its skin. Three small round piercings (ko-sukashi) complete the composition. The original seller also describes a shakudō fukurin and notes that signed Hirata tsuba are very rare. The photographs show the enamels intact and a dark brown iron, with a reddish tone on the seppa-dai. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which does not appear in the photographs, and the piece comes in a fitted paulownia box. Dimensions: 79.4 × 77.3 mm; thickness at the seppa-dai, 4.8 mm.
