The piece
Shakudō kōgai with a nanako ground and a sailing boat on the waves in takabori with gold and silver iroe, attributed to Gotō Teijō by an inscription of the thirteenth Gotō master.
Kōgai attributed to Gotō Teijō, ninth master of the main Gotō line, active in the 17th century; according to the original seller he served the Maeda house of Kaga and laid the foundations for the flourishing of Kaga metalwork. The reverse bears the attribution inscription 紋程乗 光孝 (mon Teijō Mitsutaka) followed by a kaō, engraved by the thirteenth master of the Gotō line, who recognised the work as Teijō's; the photographs show it clearly. The subject is a hokakebune, a sailing boat on gentle waves: the obverse plate is shakudō with an extremely fine nanako evoking the sky, the waves are in takabori with silver iroe, and the wind-filled sail is in gold iroe. The body and reverse are gilt; the seller describes the reverse as kinpuku. According to the seller it measures 212 mm in length and 12.8 mm in width, and comes from Kyoto, Yamashiro province. In the photographs the carving is crisp and the nanako intact, with some light scuffing on the gold. It comes in a fitted paulownia box. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu certificate, which does not appear in the photographs.
